Interests and Expertise

  • Coastal processes and management
  • Coastal flooding and erosion
  • Impacts of climate change
  • Shoreline changes
  • GIS
  • Sediment transport

Dr Luciana Esteves has a research and teaching background in coastal oceanography, with focus on physical processes, coastal management and spatial analysis using GIS. Her research interests are the multidisciplinary aspects (integration between physical, ecological and socio-economic dimensions) of coastal management issues, especially related to flood and erosion risk. She has conducted research in Brazil, the USA and in the UK. More recently, she has worked in research projects funded by the EU, NERC and SW Regional Development Agency addressing the impacts of storms on coastal morphology, coastal flooding by extreme events and environmental impacts of marine renewable energy. Currently she is working in the EU-funded project Solutions for Environmental Contrasts in Coastal Areas (SECOA).
