Frances Hollis, who recently completed her Ph.D on 'the Workhome: a New Building Type?' has been awarded a grant from the Daiwa Foundation for a research trip to study the live-work building type in Japan.
Cities Institute’s Centre for Housing & Community Research has been successful in a bid for European Union Framework 7 (FP7) funding for a 3 year project starting in May 2008: Combating social exclusion among young homeless populations (CSEYHP), a comparative investigation of homelessness among local white, ethnic and migrant young men and women. Cities Institute is a participating stakeholder in an Urban Design Charrette being held over the next few months in Deptford south east London. Hosted by Creative Process (ex-Creative Lewisham Agency) with the support of the BRE and Greenwich and Lewisham boroughs, a series of public consultation and design workshops are being held in the area, leading to a design and planning vision for Deptford Creekside. Fairia Sharmeen and Julius Bas have joined the AUNT-SUE research team, undertaking resident surveys and guided map walks in Somerstown King’s Cross around issues of accessibility, safety and transport. A video of the AUNT-SUE project is being produced by Chris Lane [DASS] and MA Digital Media students, which will be premiered at the London Festival of Architecture on 3 July (below).

Cities Institute will be participating in the London Festival of Architecture (LFA08) having exhibited at previous biennales in 2004 & 2006. This July we will be holding exhibitions and workshops at two venues: firstly on 3 July, AUNT-SUE (accessible transport and urban design) workshop and video presentation at the LFA HQ in the Building Centre located in Store Street, W1, and also in Clerkenwell where we will be mounting an exhibition and talks on VivaCity2020: urban sustainability & quality of life, between 11-20 July at the Curved Angel, Clerkenwell Close, EC1.
