Evidence-based research for urban policy makers & practitioners

The Cities Institute undertakes research into urban society in its human, physical and economic dimensions. The culture of cities is at the heart of our work, which takes an integrated and inter-disciplinary approach to the concepts, policies and practices that help explain and influence the success of particular cities and urban quality of life. We interrogate socio-economic trends and the impacts of infrastructural developments and architectural interventions at domestic, neighbourhood, local and regional levels.

Our research follows particular themes: sustainable development, quality of life, social inclusion, urban design quality, cultural diversity and cosmopolitan cities

Our aim is to:

  • extend academic strategic research, applied policy research and related action research, and in particular to integrate and inform each of these
  • develop innovative methodologies and thinking in urban research
  • evaluate policy impacts and formulations which lead to and incorporate inclusive practice and governance
  • develop practical interventions that make a positive difference to the quality of life in cities and enhance community development and professional practice.
